Ballet
(Includes Modern Ballet)

Dances should include adage and allegro, the use of well-known repertoire, choreography or music is discouraged.

All styles and developments in technique including characterisation and humour are encouraged providing the projection, beating and presentation of the routine is fully sustained and appropriate.

Modern/Jazz

Modern is an all-inclusive term applied to an ever-evolving performing art. It includes jazz and all styles of modern theatre dance. Acrobatics are acceptable only when combined with a strong dance technique.

Lyrical Modern
Max 2 minutes
Based on modern dance technique, lyrical modern should show flowing movements expressing the emotion of the music. No acrobatic moves and floor work should be kept to a minimum

Contemporary
Max 2 minutes
Choreography should explore themes and the use of contraction, extension, and relaxation should be explored along with the use of the spine. Dancers should show they have a deep understanding of what initiates movements and why. The space should be explored in a multi layered way including, levels, planes, and facings.

Musical Theatre
Max 2 ½ minutes
The song should set the scene, mood and style of the dance. The focus will be on the interpretation of the song with the appropriate movement reflecting the words and the mood, being well sustained throughout.

Character
Max 2 minutes
A dramatic and sometimes humorous presentation of a story from any book, play film etc or historical characters, or the mannerisms and essential features of a person, animal etc. Competitors are permitted to interpret the words of a song or spoken word. Ballet is the traditional dance technique used although any classical technique is acceptable.
